A testimony of God’s healing

From the day I first found out that what was interfering with my ability to swallow food, talk and even breathe was a tumour in my throat, God promised He was going to heal me. Half an hour before I went to the doctor I asked God to speak to me. Immediately I heard, “Jeremiah 29:11,” which in my ESV Bible reads, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

In September 2010 I was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma which is considered incurable. I was told it was stage four; the cancer had infiltrated pretty much my whole body and all of its systems. The prognosis was stark according to the medical statistics and I spent some of those early days in fear, but as time went on I had joy and peace, and faith in God because He has been so very present with me throughout. It has truly been a journey of testing and of faith to walk through these past few months. Many times my faith faltered, but thanks to the love of God, and the prayers of a hundred or more people who have faithfully lifted me up to the Throne Room, I’ve had the strength to make it through.

On February 4, 2011, I travelled to Vancouver for more tests, and procedures to prepare me for a bone marrow transplant. The CT scan showed that except for a small spot on my throat where a huge tumour had been, there was no sign of cancer anywhere in my body. Previously all of my lymph nodes had been involved. The results of the bone marrow biopsy were normal! In other words, no cancer! I could hardly believe it!

I want to thank everyone who has prayed for me over the past few months. This has truly been a shared journey, and I am so so grateful for your encouragement. Please pray now for wisdom. The doctors want me to go through with the bone marrow transplant. They see this as a remission rather than a miracle. I want to witness to them about what the Lord has done and decline the transplant, but I need great wisdom, and the knowledge and conviction that this is what God wills for me.

God has been faithful to His promise. I am whole again, and I rejoice in knowing that He has a future and a hope for me. There are already a couple of things lined up for me to begin in my new community of Powell River as soon as I am able. One is an outreach ministry to the folks in the rural neighbourhood of my church. I’m longing to reach those who are lost with my testimony of His love and power to heal; to serve my God and my King! My life truly belongs to Him now!

Rejoicing!

September 2010 Letter

September 1st, 2010

Dear Friend,

TV Thomas is a dear colleague with vast international missionary experience.  He recently spoke at an ‘Equipping Evangelist’ event of the exciting escalation of Christianity in the two-thirds world.  He noted ‘most of what you are hearing about widespread conversion is true’.  It is thrilling to hear these stories – we value and need good news!

But he continued: ‘Here in the west we are excitedly talking about evangelism taking place in the two-thirds world.  However, the two-thirds world is not excitedly talking about us, and for good reason: our efforts are meagre in comparison’.  Sadly, we had to agree.

Can we blame the culture, the challenges of secularism, pluralism, consumerism?  While some might argue for it, the early church was born in such a hostile environment!  Putting it bluntly, the problem is not on the outside but on the inside.  Taking the good news into the market place is not priority; it is not a consuming compelling vision of ours, unlike our brothers and sisters in much of Asia, Africa and South America.  There is little in the way of staffing, of training, and of financing evangelistic efforts. There is a general lack of urgency or concern for lost people.

Still, we have good news!  Though Canadians may show little interest in status quo religion, they are voting YES in their hope to experience God!  The outward looking church chooses to offer hope, to take risks and to find ways to bridge the gap.  As many are coming to realize, a church that is true to her calling is the most powerful force for transformative change.

To the praise of God, we are seeing this truth being realized in Threshold Ministries, through street level projects, prison chapels, youth gatherings, cafe-style church meetings, camps, home meetings, drop-ins, and with congregations turning inside out.  Vision is stirring, risks are being taken, creativity is on the rise and faith is expectant.  We do not pretend to have it all figured out.  We do experience setbacks, but in our frailty we are reminded: “The devil trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees!”  To His praise alone there are good news stories to share.  Lives are being changed; projects to reach people on the margins are in full gear; risks are being taken; doors are opening; teens are finding Christ; hope is alive!

On behalf of all the team at Threshold Ministries across the nation, please accept our deepest thanks for your encouragement, love and support.  You have helped us to train, staff and finance evangelistic projects.

Please continue to support this work in prayer.  We are ‘on the threshold’ of missionary and evangelistic possibilities from coast to coast to coast.

Your brother in Christ,
Bruce Smith
National Director

New Evangelists Commissioned and Released

May 18th, 2010

Debora Kantor, Andrea Taylor, Winnie Ollerhead, Catherine Bonham and Eden McAuley

On April 26, 2010 at 7pm, 400+ people gathered in Stone Church (Saint John NB) for our Commissioning Service. It was an incredible holy night as five (5) individuals committed their lives to service and the ministry of evangelism.  Catherine Bonham (Milton ON), Debora Kantor (Cambridge-Narrows NB), Eden McAuley (Riverview NB), Winnie Ollerhead (Torbay NL) and Andrea Taylor (Jamaica) were commissioned as Evangelists and licensed with Threshold Ministries.  They will be spreading out across North America to be witnesses for Christ and serve the people He has called them to.

Catherine and her husband, Gord, will be remaining in Saint John as we begins ministering in the uptown area of Saint John NB through Stone Church.  Her ministry will focus on community outreach.  Eden, with his wife Carolyn, will continue ministering in Moncton NB; and begin planting a ministry base to serve the disenfranchised men and woman in the downtown area.  Andrea Taylor will return to Jamaica and serve as a Chaplain; while Winnie and Debora continue in a period of discernment for their place of ministry.

The evening involved many local friends and ministry partners.  Hilary Branch and Stephanie Mainville led worship while Charles Price (People’s Church, Toronto ON) was the preacher.  Charles delivered a stirring message that called and challenged all those present to reconsider our Call.  “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.  I am the God of your father.” (Exodus 3:5-6)

May we continue to pray for these individuals are released into the mission field.

From the Chair

May 1st, 2010

Dear Friend and supporter of Threshold Ministries:

I am thankful to God for the opportunity granted me at our Annual Meeting to serve as the Board Chair of Church Army, now newly renamed Threshold Ministries.

We are at a crucial time in our History.  Having celebrated 80 years in Canada, we are rebranding ourselves so that while building on the foundations laid over the last 80 years, we may with vigor refocus on the continuing mission, to join Jesus in “seeking and saving the lost.”  We have a very dedicated company of evangelists serving under the exceptional leadership of Bruce Smith.  Miracles of grace are reported weekly.  It is a privilege to be associated with these gifted servants of our Lord Jesus Christ.

For many years we depended for any shortfall in donations on the money generated from the sale of the property we had owned in Toronto.  That money also provided the excellent buildings we now occupy in Saint John. The remainder has now been used for ministry purposes.

You, our supporters, are a dedicated, generous company, without whom the work could not continue.  And we depend on you from month to month for the gifts that enable us to continue.  I know that many of us are doing all that we can.  For those of us who can do a little bit more, now is the time it will make a strategic difference to what Bruce and his team can accomplish in our name for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we renew our efforts under the Threshold Ministries banner.

Sincerely in His Name.
John W. Irwin, Chair

PR: Same Mission, New Brand

March 24th, 2010

Same Mission, New Brand

March 24, 2010 (Saint John NB) – Thankful for its 81 year history in Canada, the Church Army in Canada will be operating as Threshold Ministries as of May 1, 2010.  This name change comes after many years of discernment and discussion with staff and supporters.  It became clear that in this new millennium the historic name ‘Church Army’ created more barriers than bridges. The mandate for Threshold Ministries will continue to be “helping bring people, from all walks of life, into a living relationship with Jesus Christ and with His people.” Threshold represents for us a place of new beginnings both for our community of evangelist but more importantly for those who put their trust in Jesus as a result of our ministry. Threshold is the place of entrance into the Kingdom of God and a place of exit into the world in mission.

We have discovered over the years that key to any genuine evangelism is relationship building. An authentic love for people is crucial, just as Jesus loved people.  In order to have such opportunities, there can be no unnecessary walls or obstacles to relationships and opportunities to share our faith with others.  This ministry is meant to be focused on inviting others to know they are welcome, wanted, needed and loved by Jesus.  We do not exist for ourselves.  This is not a club.  There can be no wall between the message of Jesus and the people.

Over the course of the last number of years, we have tried to examine any ways we may have constructed or accepted barriers that are preventing people from hearing the message we long to share. It is has been a challenging soul-searching exercise. But it is essential to listen if we are truly serious about being effective in sharing our faith in the 21st century.

Our new name, Threshold Ministries, celebrates this mission journey with our Lord!  Our passion for the Great Commission and the Great Commandment remains paramount. We believe that the renaming will actually build bridges of opportunity for mission and evangelism.  To position ourselves to reach this culture we have agreed that now is the time for a 21st century name.

Globally, Church Army dates back to 1882 and began as a response to minister to those living in the slums of London UK.  The official work in Canada began in 1929 based, initially, in Toronto. Today the Church Army has provided the church with trained evangelists, a God-given calling, founded on the Scriptures.
