“COME ON, LET’S GO TO BETHLEHEM! LET’S SEE THIS WONDERFUL THING THAT HAS HAPPENED, WHICH THE LORD HAS TOLD US ABOUT.” (LUKE 2:15B NLT)
This is the response of the shepherds after the angel has greeted them. The angel, joined by the “armies of heaven”, stands before the shepherds praising God – announcing the birth of the Messiah.
This is indeed a royal entrance!
It is interesting that even though it would appear that heaven would roll out the red carpet to announce the birth of the Messiah, the first VIPs are not whom we would expect. The angel did not seek out the rulers, the kings or the emperors – the angel sought out the shepherds.
The shepherds. The lowly, dirty, smelly, peasant labourers, who’s responsibility it was to live in the fields and care for the sheep. These men were often forgotten and certainly would have fallen into the same category as the untouchables. And their response to the news – “They ran to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger” (Luke 2:16).
They ran. With great haste they left what they were doing to visit and greet the Lord.
God birthed into our reality, chose to go to the meek and lowly first and invite them to come. What does this show us of God’s character? He invites us, and wants to receive as we are, His gift of freedom and acceptance.
Life began to be birthed inside those shepherds – “…the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child.” (Luke 2:17) The moment life begins to come alive within us, we cannot help but to share it and tell others.
What shepherds do we know, or rather, what shepherds have we forgotten about, that we can be bearers of Good News to this season?
“GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST HEAVEN,
AND PEACE ON EARTH TO ALL WHOM
GOD FAVOURS.” (LUKE 2:14)
May you know this same joy and receive this same freedom this holiday season.
