Threshold Ministries has been awarded five contracts from Correctional Services Canada for faith community reintegration. This is the new name given to what has been known as community chaplaincy – working with ex-offenders and their families.
The revolving door of inmates in prison is an all too familiar reality in Canada. Without a sense of purpose, hope and healthy community surrounding them, individuals can easily fall into old lifestyles; even with the best of intentions. The Faith Community Reintegration Program will address the gap and support ex-offenders as they move back into communities.
For Threshold Ministries, this is a renewal of the commitment we maintain to care for those in need, and an area of ministry that we have historically supported. Our evangelists and their volunteers will offer several diverse faith-based, social activities to foster a sense of belonging while contributing to spiritual growth. We will work with various community based social organizations that offer spiritual services as well as practical support to ex-offenders.
Many of us are affected in some way by the correctional system. Be it family or friends, known or kept in secret, together we need to be working towards healthy, holistic reintegration into community. The aim is to bridge the gap to help break the cycle of repeat offenders and journey alongside those in need.
Currently, we will be working in Toronto, ON and Peterborough, ON as well as in Fredericton, NB, Moncton, NB and Saint John, NB. Over the next few months, we will be profiling our evangelists in these areas and sharing highlights of these new ministries.
If this is an area of ministry that interests you, we invite you to begin praying for these ministries, and to consider partnering with us as we look at increasing the impact that can be made toward reintegration.
I wish people knew the extent to which others struggle with these issues and how far this impact can push them.
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25: 35-36
